GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The purpose of this position is to evening custodial lead and participate in the cleaning and maintenance of the Durham County Courthouse and other County facilities.

This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. 

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

 

  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Ensures the Courthouse and other assigned facilities are clean, sanitary, and safe environment by maintaining janitorial processes for the facilities.  Duties include disinfecting, cleaning and sanitizing facilities including but not limited to bathrooms, courtrooms, offices and public areas; empty trash; inventory and maintain supplies and materials; restock necessary items in restrooms as needed; and proper use of chemicals while cleaning.
  • Perform general outdoor services and maintenance, such as watering plants, sweeping entry areas, cleaning glass doors at entrances.
  • Report major damages through proper reporting channels and oversee the completion of repairs.
  • Inventories and maintains supplies and materials; replaces toilet tissue, soap, urinal cartridges and paper towels in restrooms as needed; ensures proper use of chemicals while cleaning; pick up litter from around the building and grounds; builds and maintains positive relationships; maintains excellent communication; and safety.
  • Performs in the absence of the Custodian Supervisor.
  • Performs work during inclement weather, snow removal etc. is an essential worker.
  • Demonstrates, models, and actively engages in the alignment and execution of the County's Strategic Plan Initiatives to ensure the objectives of the core goals are achieved to benefit Durham County employees, citizens, and the environment.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals
  • Knowledge of safety measures in the workplace
  • Knowledge of workorder systems and introductory computer skills
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety associated with the work
  • Knowledge of the common practices, tools, and terminology used in maintaining buildings
  • Ability to address complaints and satisfy customers
  • Ability to understand oral and written directions
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and public

 

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Six (6) months of experience in building maintenance, commercial or residential cleaning or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

 

  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Minimum of 3 years as a lead or supervisor
  • Bilinigual in English and Spanish.
