GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Performs responsible professional work in the public library system; does related work as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide coverage for the North Carolina Collection, the special collections department of Durham County Library. Duties include:
- Holding shifts at the NCC Information Desk and providing research assistance to customers both in-person and remotely through email, phone, and chat.
- Work on collection-based projects. This can include archival processing of manuscript collections, cataloging work with the bibliographic collection, management of digital collections, and digitization of materials.
- Participate in promotional activities for the collection including creating digital and physical exhibits, holding instructional sessions with a wide variety of customers, and hosting library programs.
Must be available for a Saturday rotation and for holiday coverage. The position in the North Carolina Collection is expected to work at least 20 hours per week.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- General knowledge of professional library and archival principles, procedures, materials and practices.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and library patrons.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Strong computer skills in a variety of tools, software, and platforms.
REQUIREMENT:
Completion of an accredited master's program in library science from an ALA accredited library school.
PREFERRED:
North Carolina local history knowledge preferred as well as experience in archives or special collections.
