RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Parenting Coordinator for child welfare services provides parenting education services to families with active child welfare cases.  S/he will implement an evidence-based parenting curriculum that is aimed at increasing family stability, strengthening individual support systems and preventing/remedying/assisting in the solution of problems which may result in neglect, abuse, exploitation or delinquency of children.

 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Understanding family structures, parenting styles and the impact of trauma and separation on families.
  • Knowledge of cultural factors influencing parenting and family interactions
  • Understanding of federal, state and local child welfare laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development
  • Understanding of how abuse, neglect and trauma affect development and behavior
  • Active listening and clear verbal/written communication tailored to diverse populations 
  • Ability to explain complex processes in accessible terms
  • Build rapport and trust with families
  • Provide parent education and support through one-on-one coaching and group facilitation
  • Work effectively as a part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to assess family needs and develop creative, individualized strategies

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

Master’s degree from an accredited school of social work and one year of social work experience; or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of social work and two years of social work or counseling experience; or Master’s degree in a counseling field and two years of social work or counseling experience; or a four-year degree in a human services field or related curriculum and three years of social work or counseling experience; or graduation from a four-year college or university and four years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling or a related human service field providing experience in the techniques of casework, group work or community organization; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. One year of work experience can be credited for completion of the social work collaborative.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires a valid North Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable three-year driving record and a vehicle.
