RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

This position will support Child and Family Services units by assessing skill sets, mentoring and supporting social workers and supervisors to ensure compliance with state policies. This position will focus on four areas which include assessing and/or developing a social worker’s level of competence of the work and policies, encouraging and increasing a social worker’s confidence in their abilities to complete tasks, observing and improving a social worker’s ability to build healthy, professional connections with families and community partners, and building character/caring Social Workers.

 

This position will provide support for newly hired social work employees entering the Child and Family Services Division. This position will accompany new department social workers to their first case initiation to conduct field observations and provide guidance as needed, complete a post-observation visit interview and feedback session with the new hire. This position will meet once a week to discuss policies, work on areas of focus identified, or any additional areas as identified through the enrichment advisor’s assessment during sessions. Conduct quality reviews of the various Child Welfare Programs (i.e. CPS Investigations and Family Assessment, Foster Care, Adoptions, In-Home Services, Intake, and the Screen Out process) using record review tools.  Complete in-depth analysis on record reviews to determine error trends and causes of error trends regarding case records and case management.  Create summary reports regarding the data analyzed to present to Program Manager and Supervisors. Design and prepare educational aids and materials. Assess instructional effectiveness and summarize evaluation reports determining the impact of training on employee skills. This position will conduct group enrichment sessions when two or more social workers have been identified (or self-referred) to need assistance in the same area(s) of focus.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Expert knowledge in Child and Family Service state policies, practices and procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in Child and Family Services is provided through the Durham County Department of Social Services
  • Skilled at facilitating meetings with social workers and social work supervisors.
  • Skilled at training in state policy, practices and procedures regarding Child and Family Services.
  • Skilled at creating training around policy, practices, and procedures based on identified areas of need.
  • Utilizes innovative thinking to help assess and solve complex problems around services provided to children and families through the Department of Social Services.
  • Ability to provide technical assistance to social workers surrounding state policy, practices and procedures as well as around unit-specific requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with professional and administrative personnel.
  • Ability to work with individual social workers as well as in a group setting.
  • Ability to handle a high volume of work and meet frequent and sometimes conflicting deadlines
  •  Knowledge of methods and principles of casework supervision and training.
  • Considerable knowledge of social work principles, techniques and practices and their application to specific casework and community problems.
  • Considerable knowledge of behavioral and socioeconomic problems and their treatment and governmental and private organizations and community resources.
  • Considerable knowledge of the laws, regulations and policies which govern social work programs.
  • Ability to supervise, train, or orient lower-level social workers, students, interns, or other staff.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively. 

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Master’s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience; or a bachelor’s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience; or a master’s degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience; or a bachelor’s degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of directly related experience; or a bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience 

 

PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Master’s degree in social work or other human services related field. Ten years of directly related experience in working in a social services setting; or collectively ten years of experience within a human service setting and social services setting. Five years collectively of experience in assessing quality compliance with state policy, practices, and procedures and in a training capacity.
