GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The purpose of this job is to provide assistance in the Refugee Health Program/clinic.   The Immunization Program also includes the Refugee Health Program/clinic which provides health assessments to refugees who have newly arrived in the county to ensure that any communicable diseases of public health concern are promptly identified and treated before they can spread to others in the community. The health assessment includes a review of their medical history and health documents, referral for Class A and B conditions, communicable disease screening, immunizations assessment, administration of vaccinations as needed, referral for health conditions identified in the assessment, education about health services, and assistance with completion of US change of status forms (1-693). The nurse will follow the Refugee Health Technical Guidance manual for NC Local Health Departments issued by the NC Refugee Health Program; orients new /other Senior Public Health Nurse staff to clinic responsibilities as needed.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Independently plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care of individuals in need of immunizations;
  • Assist in the investigation of all reported cases of vaccine preventable disease and other communicable disease as assigned;
  • Provide education to healthcare providers and the public re: vaccine-preventable disease and the importance of immunization;
  • Conduct communicable disease screenings on all refugees seen in the clinic;
  • Administer vaccinations to all refugees as needed;
  • Provide necessary follow-up and referral;
  • Assist with change of status applications.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Basic knowledge of, and skill in, the application of nursing theory, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs;
  • Understanding of best practices, safety standards, and therapeutic outcomes related to the specific area(s) of practice;
  • Working knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health, including health disparities;
  • Working knowledge of available resources and organizations;
  • Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions;
  • Ability to work in partnership with patients and with other service providers to elicit needed information and to maintain effective working relationships;
  • Ability to accurately record services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports and medical instructions;
  • Some ability to oversee the work of others;
  • Adequate computer skills to allow communication, patient record documentation, accessing information.

 

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience.

 

 

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

 

A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the N. C. Board of Nursing.
