GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The primary purpose of this position is to investigate all cases of communicable disease (including outbreaks) reported to the health department by providers, hospitals, laboratories, colleges, schools, universities, daycare centers, and other healthcare facilities and organizations. to report confirmed and suspected cases and outbreaks to the NC Division of Public Health; to ensure that appropriate control measures are implemented as needed and as required by NC Public health rules and laws; and to educate the community (including helthcare providers, facilities, organizations, and citizens) regarding all aspects of communicable disease.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Investigate all cases of communicable disease (including outbreaks) reported to the health department;
  • Report confirmed and suspected cases and outbreaks to the NC Division of Public Health;
  • Ensure that appropriate control measures are implemented as needed and as required by NC Public Health rules and laws;
  • Educate the community (including healthcare providers, facilities, organizations, and citizens) regarding all aspects of communicable disease. 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Must possess knowledge of and skill in the application of principles and techniques employed in the field of public health in general and investigation of communicable diseases and conditions in particular
  • Must possess the ability to plan and coordinate investigation activites
  • Must have the ability to exercise good judgement in dealing with community healthcare providers and consumers
  • Must maintain an effective working relationship with others
  • Must have the ability to accurately record, enter, and analyze data and interpret disease trends and indicators
  • Must understand and use electronic based data and reporting systems (NCEDSS)

 

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience.

 

 

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Requires a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in NC by the NC Board of Nursing.
