GENERAL DESCRIPTION:


The purpose of this job is to perform responsible advanced skilled work in the maintenance, repair, modification, installation and construction of County facilities and equipment.

 

This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

 

  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Performs a broad range of skilled trades including carpentry and/or painting, plumbing, custodial and grounds maintenance, mechanical and related tasks.
  • Identifies problems, determines solutions and/or repair needs and performs necessary work.
  • Repairs furniture and bleachers and installs partitions, shelves, doors, windows, floors, ceilings and walls.
  • Replaces fan belts, motors, switches and other defective parts and equipment.
  • Installs toilets, foundations and other plumbing fixtures.
  • Assists with preventive maintenance on HVAC/Electrical/Plumbing equipment and components.
  • Updates buildings for new tenants.
  • Assists with providing cost estimates for repairs, installations and maintenance.
  • Performs life safety checks of fire extinguishers and ADEs.
  • Completes office moves and/or transport furniture to department offices.
  • Orders and transports materials and supplies.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • General knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, tools, terminology and safety precautions of building maintenance trades.
  • General knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials.
  • Skilled in the operation of various tools and equipment used in the trade.
  • Ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions; and maintain records.
  • Ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs.
  • Ability to rig scaffolds.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.

 

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by two (2) years of experience in the repair, construction, or maintenance of equipment and/or facilities; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

 

 

PREFERRED REQUIREMENT:

 

  • Prefer a CDL class B Driver’s License.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

 

 

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT):

 

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
