GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Work is performed as a member of the Bookmobile team under the supervision of the Family Literacy and Community Services Manager; does related work as required. This position works with all ages; however the bulk of the work is with preschool and elementary age children and their educators.
Must possess and maintain a valid NC Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record.
Must be able to drive the Bookmobile (22’ x 14’ x 10’ Sprinter Van).
Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekend and evening rotations.
Although this position is based at Main Library, the person is in the Family Literacy and Community Services Unit, a branch of Community Engagement. The required work is predominately out in the community, and at Durham County Library locations as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide excellent customer service in the team-based environment of the Family Literacy and Community Services (FLaCS) unit.
- Provide outreach, programs, and services at various events in the community to encourage discovery, connect the community, and lead in literacy.
- Provide mobile outreach services and resources to patrons in daycare facilities, schools, apartment complexes, and more
- Provide assistance to Community Engagement unit by specializing in services, programs, and resources for early childhood education and children from birth to school age
- Plan and execute stimulating and engaging activities for patrons at various organizations and/or facilities
- Assist Community Engagement staff with literacy and family focused events at library locations and out in the community
- Work with the Bookmobile Librarian to create a rotating collection of library materials to meet the needs/wishes of patrons
- Registers new borrowers and resolves issues related to library accounts
- Supports library circulation functions as required such as checking items in and out, intake and delivery of library materials, pulling holds/requests, shelving, and customer accounts related to outreach programs and services
- Drive the Bookmobile and other County vehicles as needed
- Perform related tasks as required or requested
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of currently library practices and public library services and programs
- Thorough knowledge of children’s literature
- General knowledge of reader interests and books and authors
- Ability to identify and translate patron needs and interests into effective library services and programs
- Must be able to lift and transport large quantities of books multiple times throughout the day
- Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
- Must be able to go out into the community during inclement weather
- Basic computer skills
- Possess excellent internal and external customer service skills
- Ability to understand, interpret, and comply with library rules, policies, and procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain pleasant and effective working relationships with other employees, library customers, and community organizations
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team
- Strong organizational skills
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with study in library science or related field and two years of experience in general library services.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Must possess and maintain a valid NC Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience developing, promoting, and executing outreach and community programs and services for children and families
- Spanish Language proficiency
