GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

The Durham County Library is seeking an innovative library professional to lead the Main Library's STEAM services unit. The Senior Librarian will be responsible for the impelmentation of successful and engaging services and programs to help promote maker and STEAM activities with all ages in the library. 

 

Work is performed with independence under the supervision of the Main Library Manager. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Serves as the STEAM Services Unit Manager at the Main Library  

  • Oversee the library’s two maker/STEAM spaces, the STEAM services team, and STEAM-related programming and outreach.  

  • Responsible for training, supervision and management of the STEAM Services staff. 

  • Performs professional and administrative library work and develops and provide library services and programs that support the library’s strategic plan. 

  • Assists with preparation and monitoring of unit budget. 

  • Oversee, in conjunction with IT staff, the upkeep and use of Maker technologies in the Main Library and system-wide 

  • Planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating STEAM programming at the Main Library 

  • Provides excellent customer service in a team-based environment. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

  • Thorough knowledge of library resources, procedures, and systems  

  • Analytical skills and knowledge of tools for evaluating the community and its information needs. 

  • Experience planning, implementing and evaluating programs for a wide variety of customers. 

  • Ability to plan innovative programs in multiple locations. 

  • Ability to adapt programming to meet the needs and skill levels of customers.   

  • Ability to analyze problems, recommend solutions and make decisions. 

  • High degree of comfort learning new technologies.  

  • Experience with computer coding, programming, circuitry, 3D printing and/or other Maker.STEAM literacy technologies  

  • Ability to use good judgement in daily services. 

  • Ability to relate library services to the needs of the community. 

  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees. 

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 

Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited school and six months of experience in professional library work. 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

The ideal candidate should possess considerable public library experience and experience running Makerspaces.
