RESPONSIBILITIES:
The purpose of this position is to perform inspections, maintenance, diagnosis, repair, performance testing and operational checks on emergency response vehicles, automobiles, and related equipment.
This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs routine and more complex preventive maintenance, servicing and inspections of cars, trucks, ambulances and larger grounds equipment; identifies causes of malfunctions and repairs mechanical, electrical, air conditioning and other automotive systems.
- Determines if repairs should be repaired externally or in the repair shop; schedule and perform routine vehicle inspections; maintain related records.
- Monitor inventory levels, obtain, and maintain stock of frequently used maintenance and replacement items.
- Inspection of completed vehicle maintenance and repairs both in-house and outsourced.
- Measures the mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, or electrical characteristics of an item and compares the characteristics with prescribed standards.
- Solicits, schedules, and coordinates work of outside vendors and suppliers.
- Performs North Carolina Safety and Emissions inspections on all fleet vehicles.
- Performs minor body repair work.
- Documents all repair and maintenance work performed, including labor, supplies and equipment.
- Responds to request for road service as needed or ensures availability of emergency service.
- Cleans and maintains garage area as required.
- Performs related work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Considerable knowledge of automobiles, trucks and other gasoline or diesel engine driven equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of electrical theory, principles and practices as applied to electrical generators, power supplies and switching circuitry.
- Ability to use and operate various machines, hand tools and instruments appropriate to the trade.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to operate a computer and utilize software such as Microsoft Suite and database programs.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and follow written and verbal instructions accurately and efficiently.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- Two (2) year diesel certification from a technical college or school; or four (4) years of experience with diesel and gasoline vehicle repair
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
- Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable three-year driving history.
