GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Performs responsible technical and administrative work providing public information and education about Durham County Library by creating, writing, editing publications, program materials, producing video packages about library employees and programs, and coordinating a variety of special events, and marketing projects. Responsible for the library’s multiple social media channels and serving as a social media spokesperson. Position serves as a back-up in the Library Public Relations Officer’s absence and performs other related duties as required.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Library Public Relations Officer.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Produces multiple monthly Library newsletters.
- Plans, writes, edits, lays out, designs and coordinates various publications such as annual reports, news releases, brochures, fliers, and posters.
- Responsibilities include marketing project management, writing and/or soliciting articles from staff, editing all materials for accuracy, style, grammar, substance, and organization.
- Social media administration, design, and coordination across platforms and Library locations (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube).
- Produces video packages for Durham County Library’s social media platforms and web site.
- Responds to requests for information about Durham County Library.
- Assists the marketing team with creating in-house marketing materials.
- Participates in and photographs library events including in location, external booths or public information areas.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- General knowledge of the functions and operations of libraries.
- High degree of knowledge of Windows 2000, MS Office Suite, Canva, and Adobe Creative Suite is beneficial.
- Skilled in use of digital camera and scanner technology.
- Knowledge of effective writing, editing, production, and graphic presentation practices and techniques.
- Ability to design and produce newsletters and public information materials.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
- Ability to coordinate events, interviews, and meetings.
- Knowledge of communication theory, including the ability to use correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
- Strict attention to detail is required.
- Experience coordinating multiple production schedules and print deadlines, as well as experience troubleshooting and remedying related issues to ensure deadlines are met.
- Ability to master computing and social media technology and develop effective web site and social media information and copy.
- Excellent planning, organizing, and project management skills.
- Ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects and tasks both internally and externally and to make an active and meaningful contribution to the team.
- Ability to maintain effective working relations with employees, the public, and partner organizations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree in communications, English, journalism, media or a related field and two years experience in writing newsletters, news releases, video packages, feature articles and providing general public information activities.

- Ability to read or speak Spanish highly desired
