The primary purpose of this position is to provide day-to- day management of the Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Clinic, which includes oversight of the evaluation and reporting of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) testing and counseling of persons diagnosed with HIV/Syphilis. This position has immediate supervisory responsibilities for all personnel in the STI Clinic areas, including STI and HIV/AIDS. Within this category of clinic management, at least 20% of time is spent providing medical care to patients as an RN; assesses evaluates, and administers treatment to clients who present with or are at high risk for STI, understanding order and protocols established and approved by the Durham County Department of Public Health (DCoDPH) Medical Director; provides education and counseling to clients regarding STI prevention; explains and issues control measures to clients, 




Must possess thorough knowledge of and skill in the application of principles and techniques employed in the field of medicine, nursing, and public health, including communicable diseases and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Considerable knowledge of public health nursing supervision of staff and programs. Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of others.


  • Basic knowledge of, and skill in, the application of nursing theory, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs.
  • Understanding of best practices, safety standards, and therapeutic outcomes related to the specific area(s) of practice.
  • Working knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health, including health disparities.
  • Working knowledge of available resources and organizations.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
  • Ability to work in partnership with patients and with other service providers to elicit needed information and to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to accurately record services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports and medical instructions.
  • Some ability to oversee the work of others.
  • Adequate computer skills to allow communication, patient record documentation, accessing information




Requires graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation, or Master’s in Public Health and graduation from a school of professional nursing; or graduation from a school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must be a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
