RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The primary purpose of this position is to provide medical care and services to patients who present to the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STI) Clinic with STI-related conditions.  In addition, the position will provide some assistance in the Refugee Health Clinic regarding communicable disease screenings for newly arrived refugees. This advanced practitioner will assess and manage patients presenting to Durham County Department of Public Health (DCoDPH) with common communicable diseases, with a focus on STIs. The advanced practitioner will manage patients through the processes of evaluation, diagnosis, medical treatment, and patient education.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

  • Thorough knowledge of techniques of interviewing, medical and relevant history taking, principles and practices of general medicine and disease states as the relate to the area of work

  • Ability to orient and precept new learners

  • Considerable knowledge of health appraisal tools, laboratory tests and findings, material medical, and therapeutic procedures as relate to the area of work

  • Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with others and to foster good working relationships among staff members

  • Ability to teach and counsel individuals, families, and groups in areas of health maintenance

  • Considerable knowledge and ability to a regime of care based on assessment and findings

  • Ability to examine patients and detect abnormalities

  • Ability to understand and use electronic based data and reporting systems

  • Ability to teach and counsel individuals, families, and groups in areas of health maintenance, preventive medicine, and care of the sick

  • Ability to record accurately and completely all information necessary to evaluate and plan care and to convey this to the physician

  • Ability to be flexible and receptive to change in dealing with staff needs, agency needs, changing patient populations, changing program requirements, and other community agencies.

REQUIREMENTS

 

Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the North Carolina Medical Board or approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Medical Board. Graduation from a Physician Assistant Program approved by the N. C. Board of Medical Examiners and "approved to practice medical acts" based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners; or licensed as a Registered Nurse by the N. C. Board of Nursing, graduation from a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the N. C. Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and "approved to practice medical acts" based on education and experience by the Joint Subcommittee; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
