The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for providing comprehensive pharmacy services under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. This position is also responsible for administrative and clerical support to the pharmacy as well as inventory monitoring and control.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Provide pharmacy services to DCoDPH clinics and other clients by properly processing prescriptions and dispensing medications under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.
- Recognize and troubleshoot suspicious and/or erroneous prescriptions prior to dispensing medications.
- Adhere to HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality requirements.
- Maintain adequate 340B and non-340B medication and supply inventory.
- Place orders and monitor credits, returns, and exchanges.
- Ensure continual monitoring, ordering, rotating, and returning of expired medication.
- Provide accurate inventory documentation records for auditing purposes.
- Adhere to all pharmacy policies and procedures regarding filling and dispensing prescriptions, patient counseling, and corrective action.
- Maintain daily pharmacy operations by operating the Parata unit dose instrument.
- Maintain an orderly pharmacy.
- Prepare prescription count reports monthly and as requested.
- Adhere to 340B and NC Board of Pharmacy requirements.
- Greet pharmacy guests, answer questions, and direct to service.
- Monitor telephone calls and route as appropriate.
- Provide clerical assistance to pharmacy management.
- Maintain pharmacy records and prescriptions in an organized and retrievable manner.
- Performs related work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Continuous professional development through seminars and workshops.
- Independent reading of textbooks, journals, and manuals;
- Maintain current knowledge of HIPAA regulations by enrolling in classes offered by Durham County;
- General knowledge of medical and pharmacy terminology and processing techniques;
- General knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs and formulas;
- General knowledge of chemical procedures used to compound, reconstitute and dilute drugs;
- Ability to fill prescriptions and prepare admixture solutions accurately with limited supervision;
- Ability to make accurate observations concerning drug qualities and quantities and to label drugs correctly as to type and strength;
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of a nine-month Pharmacy Technician program or graduation from high school and one year of pharmacy-related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
To further the mission of the Durham County Department of Public Health (DCoDPH) to partner with our community to advance health equity, protect the environment, and promote health and wellness for all, DCoDPH is implementing the employee vaccination and tuberculosis screening policies. All DCoDPH employees are considered healthcare personnel (HCP) working in a health care setting with the potential for exposure to patients and/or infectious materials and, therefore, are required to comply and provide documented proof of the following:
- Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR) vaccination/immunity
- Varicella-Zoster Virus (Chicken Pox) vaccination/immunity
- Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)
- Tuberculosis (TB) baseline screening within the last twelve (12) months prior to employment
- Hepatitis B vaccination/immunity – only required for DCoDPH employees with potential Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) exposures.
Identified DCoDPH HCP with potential Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) exposure have an additional requirement for the Hepatitis B vaccination. Required vaccination, serological testing to determine immunity, and baseline tuberculosis screening are available for all Public Health employees who elect to become DCoDPH patients upon request and at no cost.
Proof of vaccination and tuberculosis screening must be provided to Human Resources within seven (7) business days prior to the date of employment.
