GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The purpose of the Operations & Maintenance II position is to perform, as lead, routine skilled and technical work in the operation of the Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant (TWWTP). The TWWTP is rated for an average daily flow of 12 million gallons per day and is specifically designed to meet future nutrient load requirements for the Jordan Lake nutrient management strategy. The TWWTP serves the southeast portion of Durham County inside and outside the Durham City limits and serves the Research Triangle Park within Durham County.  The collection and treatment of domestic sewage and wastewater is vital to public health and clean water. It is among the most important factors responsible for the general level of good health enjoyed in the United States. 

 

This position works under the supervision of the Utility Supervisor according to set procedures and is subject to working rotating shifts to provide continual coverage of the wastewater treatment plant.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

 

  • Takes the lead with operating, adjusting, and maintaining equipment at TWWTP facility; monitors plant operations by observing plant processes; monitors chemical feeds; collects and analyzes process control lab samples; and complies with work safety rules and procedures.
  • Cleans and performs minor repairs on plant equipment; cleans assigned work areas; and receives and unloads bulk chemical deliveries.
  • Maintains records, logs, databases, documentation, and online systems; enters and updates data to document maintenance; reviews and verifies records to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Is the lead operator on shift and performs related work as assigned.
  • Make reasonable decisions in plant operations to optimize treatment and plant performance according to permit guidelines.
  • Follow the Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant permits, and the state required limits for all treatment parameters.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • General knowledge of the principles, procedures, and techniques used in the operation of wastewater treatment facilities;
  • General knowledge of chemical, physical, and bacteriological analyses of wastewater;
  • General knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the equipment used in wastewater treatment;
  • General knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and regulations related to wastewater treatment and laboratory analyses;
  • Skill in planning, organizing and prioritizing work; skill in the use of a computer;
  • Skill in oral and written communication and the ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.

 

UNAVOILDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT):

 

  • The work is typically performed in both an office and the wastewater treatment facility, while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.
  • The employee is required to use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) while being exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals.
  • The work may be performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather and requires the use of protective devices.
  • The employee occasionally lifts light objects (20 to 50 pounds), climbs ladders, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and two years of experience in municipal or industrial wastewater treatment, laboratory operations, wastewater system inspection, or related experience. 

  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Must possess a NC Biological Wastewater Grade III Certification and a valid North Carolina driver's license with a three-year acceptable driving record for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.  Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds.
