GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
As part of the Maker + STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Unit, the part-time Office Assistant (50% FTE) will assist with coordinating and implementation of Maker and STEAM-focused services and programs for all ages, preschool through older adults.
This position will work primarily afternoons/evenings/nights and rotating weekends. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including rotating Saturdays and Sundays and evening rotations.
Work is performed with collaboration and independence under the supervision of the Maker + STEAM Services Unit Manager. Although this position is based at Main Library, the person is in the Maker + STEAM Services Unit, a branch of Community Engagement. The required work is both at Main Library and out in the community and Durham County Library locations as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide excellent customer service on the makerspace service desk, including specialized services to the public within Maker + STEAM topics and assisting with makerspace equipment reservations
- Assist with basic inventory and upkeep of supplies and equipment for the library’s makerspaces
- Assist full-time staff within the Unit to implement programming and outreach focused on Maker and STEAM topics with an emphasis on bridging the digital divide and providing access to emerging technologies to support growth in transferable skills to workforce development and community thriving
- Support library functions through performing related tasks as required, such as assisting at other service desks when needed, checking items in and out, intake and delivery of library materials, pulling holds/requests, shelving, and patron accounts related to outreach programs and services
- Provide excellent internal and external customer service in a collaborative, team-based environment
- Perform related tasks as required or requested
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of library resources, procedures, ethics, and systems
- A degree of comfort in learning new technologies and desire to continually grow and learn
- Some experience with computer coding, programming, circuitry, 3D printing, cutting machines (laser cutter and Cricut), and/or other Maker/STEAM technologies
- Analytical skills and knowledge of tools for evaluating the community and its information needs
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, adapting communication to meet the needs, ages, gaps, and skill levels of patrons
- Strong computer skills, especially with learning new technologies and with communication methods
- Ability to use good judgment in daily services
- Strong executive functioning and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Ability to maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with the public and with other employees
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High School graduation or GED equivalent
- One (1) year of customer service, clerical support or related experience preferred
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Public Library experience
- Experience with Maker and/or STEAM topics and technology
- Ability to speak Spanish a plus
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
