RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Nutrition Specialist position is a job-shared position (18 hours/week) and an integral part of the Durham Innovative Nutrition Education (DINE) team, a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) program.  The position is responsible for inspiring SNAP eligible Durham residents to adopt healthy eating behaviors through workshops, cooking demonstrations, social marketing, and e-newsletters. Pregnant women/caretakers of infants and children and seniors in food stamp households are the target population for programming.

 

TYPICAL TASKS:

 

  • Designs programming and teaches about the fundamentals of wellness and disease prevention, meal planning, preparation of low cost balanced meals, management of food resources and food buying.  
  • Works closely with community agencies to organize nutrition programming at eligible sites. 
  • Designs and implements large social marketing campaigns aimed at changing health behaviors of low income Durham residents.
  • Uses social media as a platform to market program and nutrition messages. 
  • Responsible for the DINE e-newsletter.
  • Purchases and prepares food and supplies for taste tests and programming. 
  • Responsible for data collection and evaluation of project activities and for writing reports required for the project. 

 

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Requires good written and oral communication skills,
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team.
  • Ability to work early morning, evening, and weekends is required. 

 

PREFERRED:

 

Bilingual in Spanish

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in nutrition or public health nutrition and one year of nutrition/dietitian experience or a bachelor’s degree in dietetics or foods and nutrition and two years of nutrition/dietitian experience.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

 

  • ADA Commission on Dietetic Registration and NC Dietitian/Nutritionist License.
  • A valid drivers liscense is required.
