GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

 

The Durham County Management Fellow will support the administration of the County’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funded initiatives and assist with a broad range of executive management, budget tasks, strategic research, community engagement, and special projects. ARPA funded projects to be supported include initiatives to increase affordable housing in Durham, support Durham Public Schools, support the recovery of the arts and culture sectors in Durham, support a minor home repair program for income-qualified seniors, increase digital equity, and to address food insecurity, among others. Some special projects may be more self-directed than others.

 

The management fellow will report to the County Grants Administrator, who will generally coordinate and supervise daily and weekly plans, assignments, activities and updates. Fellows will attend Board of County Commissioners’ regular meetings and work sessions and some senior management meetings.

 

DURATION/SALARY/SCHEDULE:

 

Up to two years, 37.5 hours/week, Monday-Friday, $20 - $23/hour for fellows who are either currently enrolled in a graduate program or a recent graduate.

 

LOCATION:

 

Combination of remote work and in-person work at the Durham County Manager’s Office and other Durham County areas in downtown Durham.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Durham resident who has completed an undergraduate program at a 4-year institution and student currently enrolled at a local university in their last year of graduate program, or a recent graduate with a degree in public administration, public policy, or similar field.
  • Strong communication skills: Ability to communicate clearly and successfully with internal colleagues and external stakeholders using a variety of media; ability to quickly establish productive relationships with those partners.
  • Strong technical skills: Fluency with Microsoft Office suites
  • Strong research skills: Ability to perform independent, quickly, and clearly organize/ summarize findings for senior management.
