GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
As part of the Maker + STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Unit, the Librarian will work to develop, coordinate, and implement Maker and STEAM-focused programming and outreach activities for all ages, preschool through older adults.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule including rotating Saturdays and Sundays and evening rotations.
Work is performed with independence under the supervision of the Maker + STEAM Services Unit Manager. Although this position is based at Main Library, the person is in the Maker + STEAM Services Unit, a branch of Community Engagement. The required work is both at Main Library and out in the community and Durham County Library locations as needed.
Must possess and maintain a valid NC Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implement programming and collaborative outreach activities focused on Maker and STEAM topics with an emphasis on bridging the digital divide and providing access to emerging technologies to support growth in transferable skills to workforce development and community thriving
- Provide specialized services (determined by the team and needs assessments) to the public within Maker + STEAM topics
- Help the Unit Manager and team in the maintenance and use of emerging technologies within library locations
- Assist with basic inventory and upkeep of supplies for the library’s makerspaces
- Assist at public service points as needed
- Assist with backup Manager on Duty (MOD) -related duties as directed by library administration
- Support library circulation functions as required such as checking items in and out, intake and delivery of library materials, pulling holds/requests, shelving, and patron accounts related to outreach programs and services
- Provide excellent internal and external customer service in a collaborative team-based environment
- Perform related tasks as required or requested
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of library resources, procedures, ethics, and systems
- A degree of comfort in learning new technologies and desire to continually grow and learn
- Experience with computer coding, programming, circuitry, 3D printing, cutting machines (laser cutter and Cricut), and/or other Maker/STEAM technologies
- Analytical skills and knowledge of tools for evaluating the community and its information needs
- Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating library programs for a wide variety of patrons
- Ability to plan innovative programs at multiple locations
- Ability to adapt programming to meet the needs and skill levels of patrons
- Ability to analyze problems, recommend solutions, and make decisions
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to use good judgment in daily services
- Strong executive functioning and organizational skills
- Ability to maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with the public and with other employees
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of a Master of Library Science program from an ALA-accredited library school.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Must possess and maintain a valid NC Driver's License with an acceptable driving record
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Public Library experience
- Considerable experience with Maker and STEAM topics and technology
- Considerable experience developing and implementing collaborative programming and educating patrons of varying ages and abilities
- Ability to speak Spanish a plus
