GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

The duties of the Maintenance Technician for the Solid Waste Management Division include: Collecting recyclables from Durham County buildings and facilities; Working with the County’s Litter Control Investigator to provide roadside and illegal dump site clean up services within the unincorporated areas of Durham; Assisting with the management of white goods which may include the removal of Freon and the operation of grapple truck or skid steer loader; Providing fill in relief to Site Attendants at the County's Convenience Sites which includes the operation of those facilities and assisting customers with solid waste disposal.

 

Potential to be exposed to hazardous materials, extreme weather conditions, fumes, dust, flies, insects and other pests. This position is considered an essential position and includes support duties during inclement weather situations. Normal work schedule will be Monday-Friday, 6:30am-3:00pm. Fill in/relief work for convenience sites may occur Monday - Saturday, 6:45am - 1:00pm or 12pm-6:15pm.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Must be able to work out doors and stand for long periods.
  • Must be able to complete a variety of daily report forms.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school and one year of experience with the use of common hand tools and equipment or general maintenance work. 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina and an acceptable driving record.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

CDL - class B.
