GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Serves as Children’s Librarian at the North Regional Library.
Provides excellent customer service in a team-based environment in Children’s Services at the North Regional Library, including assistance with reference, reader guidance, programming, technology, and special projects. Performs programs and outreach with appropriate community organizations. Serves on system teams and committees as assigned.
Work is performed with independence under the supervision of the Children’s Services Manager.
The person in this position will work one regular evening shift each week (11:30 a.m.– 8 p.m.) and participate in a standard weekend rotation, which includes Saturday shifts from 9:15 a.m.– 6 p.m. and a rotating Sunday schedule.
Typical Schedule: (Subject to change) **
Monday: 11:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Tuesday: 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday: 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Thursday: 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. (off when working on Saturday)
*Friday: 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
*Saturday: 9:15 a.m. – 6 p.m. (every 3rd week with 1 hour and 15-minute lunch break)
*Sunday: 12:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. (every 12th week with 10-minute break)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and present programs for youth from birth to age 12 within and outside the library.
- Promotes and publicizes library services, programming, and resources, through, but not limited to, outreach efforts in places such as schools and/or childcare center visits.
- Expands the library’s outreach to appropriate community organizations and work collaboratively with community agencies serving youth.
- Participate in planning special events such as the summer reading program, Library Fest, and other events.
- Shares in responsibility for coverage of the Information Desk and Circulation desk.
- Assists with answering reference and directional questions, assisting customers in the use of library technology such as public computers, printers, and copiers.
- Interprets library policies and procedures to the public.
- Provide reference and reader’s advisory services for customers via phone, online chat, email.
- Act as Manager on Duty and mediate customer service issues in Location Manager’s absence.
- Create book displays and book lists to promote the use of library materials.
- Assist with collection maintenance including shelf-reading and collection organization. Keeps current with new trends in library planning and services, especially issues affecting youth.
- Actively serve on system-wide teams and committees as assigned.
- Regularly work one night a week and a regular weekend rotation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of current library practices, public library services and programs, especially in children’s services
- Thorough knowledge of children's literature
- Skilled with library technology
- Ability to understand and interpret library rules, policies, and procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain pleasant and effective working relationships with other employees and library patrons
- Ability to provide excellent customer service via phone, online chat, email and in-person.
- Ability to work pleasantly and effectively with people of all ages
- Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of an accredited master's program in library science from an ALA accredited library school.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to speak Spanish, a plus
