GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 Serves as Children’s Librarian at the Southwest Regional Library.

 

Provides excellent customer service in a team-based environment in Children’s Services at the Southwest Regional Library, including assistance with reference, reader guidance, programming, technology, and special projects. Performs outreach with appropriate community organizations. Serves on system teams and committees as assigned.

 

Work is performed under the supervision of the Children’s Services Manager.

Although the position is based at the Southwest Regional Library, the selected candidate may be asked to work at other Durham County Library locations. Position will require evening and weekend shifts.   

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and implements a wide variety of children’s programs both within and outside the library.
  • Promotes and publicizes library services, programming, and resources, through, but not limited to, outreach efforts in places such as schools and/or childcare center visits.
  • Expands the library’s outreach to appropriate community organizations and work collaboratively with community agencies serving youth.
  • Participates in planning special events such as the summer reading program, Library Fest, and others.
  • Shares in the responsibility for coverage of the Children’s Information Desk.
  • Serves as the Manager on Duty (MOD) as needed.
  • Assists with answering reference and directional questions, assisting customers in the use of library technology such as public computers, printers, and copiers.
  • Interprets library policies and procedures to the public.
  • Assists with staffing Cards & Accounts and Information service point coverage as needed.
  • Creates book displays and book lists to promote the use of library materials.
  • Assists with preparation of unit budget.
  • Keeps current with new trends in library planning and services, especially issues affecting youth.
  • Performs related tasks as required or requested.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Thorough knowledge of current library practices, public library services and programs, especially in children’s services.
  • Thorough knowledge of children’s literature
  • Ability to use personal computers and library technology.
  • Ability to understand and interpret library rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and library patrons of all ages.
  • Possess excellent internal and external customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

Completion of an accredited master's program in library science from an ALA accredited library school

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Ability to speak Spanish strongly preferred.
