GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

The purpose of this job is to perform difficult skilled and responsible technical work supervising and participating in the work of a grounds maintenance crew.  This position engages in construction, maintenance and repair of public projects for the County consisting of grounds/landscaping, road and building identification signage of county-owned facilities and properties and automotive repairs and maintenance.

 

This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

 

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Develops landscape designs and specifications for public areas and grounds adjacent to county buildings
  • Develops and manages the grounds budget and expenditures.
  • Supervises the selection and meets with Durham City/County planning department for obtaining permits for acquisition, planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, flowers, and other ornamental plantings;
  • Engages in construction, maintenance, and repair of public projects for the County consisting of grounds/landscaping, road identification signs and other miscellaneous signs inside and outside of county owned facilities and properties.
  • Manages contracted work associated with complex or highly visible construction, maintenance, community development, and/or facilities projects.
  • Oversees concrete and asphalt repairs to county parking lots and grounds
  • Supervise routine maintenance work on heavy construction, automotive, and other motorized and mechanical equipment. 
  • Assists in performing maintenance tasks.
  • Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions.
  • Requisitions necessary equipment and materials.
  • Maintains time and material records.
  • Prepares simple work reports and cost estimates.
  • Trains and instructs subordinates
  • Assists Stadium Manager with stadium operations when necessary
  • This postion is consdered essential and will be required to work during inclement weather situations.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
     

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by four (4) years of experience in skilled maintenance and repair work providing ground maintenance, building repair or construction of which two (2) years in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Requires a valid NC Category L-Pesticide License and a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina, with an acceptable driving record. Must obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and a Crowd Control Certification within one year of employment.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Landscape certification preferred.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Performs light to medium work that involves walking, bending, or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy. Position is an essential worker that responds to inclement and hazardous situations.
