GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The County Food Security Coordinator drives County and community-wide efforts around food access and food policy initiatives and practices in Durham County. The role performs administrative work leading and coordinating the continuous planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the County’s comprehensive county-wide initiative to address food insecurity and access for the purpose of building an equitable, resilient, and sustainable food economy for residents to find affordable and nutritious food. The role includes working directly with internal County and external community partners and the collaborative management of the County Food Security Network and teams established for coordination and collective action on food security initiatives. The Coordinator will support the development and ongoing implementation of a food system assessment and plan for Durham County.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

 

  • Provide strategic planning and administration of integrated efforts in Durham County administered by Cooperative Extension and inclusive of other Durham County departments such as Public Health, Social Services, and Soil and Water and community partners, including regional partners, to attain outcomes related to food security.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships and partnerships with key internal and external partners, networks, coalitions, and organizations critical to the achievement of food policy goals.
  • Track and document activities and outcomes for evaluation and reporting to stakeholders; and designing food security and food system development strategies to expand funding opportunities for food security initiatives and projects.
  • Advise and brief elected officials and executive management regarding strategic direction and policy recommendations for food.
  • Identify, pursue, and manage grant funding opportunities to promote and implement new and ongoing food security initiatives, including leading collaborative fund development with County and community partners.
  • Manage efforts and tracks the shared results of actions towards priority outcomes established by Durham County.
  • Manage contracts and grants on behalf of Durham County to implement food security initiatives.
  • Perform administrative work leading and coordinating the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive county-wide initiative to address food insecurity and access for the purpose of building a robust and inclusive food economy for residents to find affordable and healthy food.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

  • Knowledge and background regarding food access issues and policy development.
  • Strong organizational leadership and planning skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the writing of reports, policy briefs, and analyses of data and trends.
  • Exceptional ability to develop and maintain positive, productive, and effective relationships and partnerships.
  • Ability to expand funding opportunities for food security initiatives and projects.
  • Ability to work with people from local government, nonprofits, local businesses and community members.
  • Active listening skills with demonstrated ability to facilitate meetings, workshops and discussions to bring diverse viewpoints together to work towards a common goal.

 

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Requires a bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Food Systems, Food Policy, Communication, Public Administration, Agriculture, Community Development or related degree with five years of relevant experience. 

 

 

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Grants and contracts management experience
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of the food system
  • High level of empathy, curiosity, and open-mindedness regarding the people and topics involved in food security work
