General Description

The purpose of this job is to identify, collect/receive, secure, and store criminal evidence and recovered property. The individual will properly process crime scenes and evidence in a thorough and methodical manner to preserve evidence.  Schedule for this position is Monday-Friday dayshift and requires being on-call on a rotating basis.

 

This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

 

  • Responds to crime scenes and provides forensic services to include photography, diagraming, video recording, latent print processing and searching / collecting evidence.
  • Conducts latent print processing on items of evidence in a laboratory setting.
  • Search, diagram, photograph and/or video tape and collect evidence.
  • Creates, organizes and administers various daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual crime analysis reports.  Respond to request from County staff and public records.
  • Retrieves, documents, submits, and tracks forensic evidence.
  • Maintains the evidence room and laboratory.
  • Research and dispose any and/or all evidence that is no longer needed for analysis or court.
  • Receive, visually inspect, log into database and store all incoming property and evidence.
  • Trains employees in evidentiary procedures.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Police Science or related field, supplemented by one (1) year of experience as a crime scene technician; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 

Physical Demands:

 

Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

  • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

  • Requires National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Certification.
