GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Performs difficult skilled and technical work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of mechanical equipment and/or electrical systems; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate workers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Inspects electrical systems and equipment such as air-conditioners, heating units, refrigeration units, air handling units, elevators, water heaters and cooling towers to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair.
- Tests electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, to ensure safe operation.
- Assembles, installs, and maintains electrical wiring, conduit, equipment, appliances, and fixtures.
- Connects wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components.
- Inspects ballasts and lighting fixtures, cleans, and replaces as needed.
- Provides cost estimates for repairs, installations, and maintenance.
- Responds to requests for service on equipment failures, power loss, etc.
- Advises management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.
- Ensures electrical systems are in compliance with applicable codes.
- Maintains records of work performed and prepares reports as needed.
- Performs general building maintenance work as needed; and
- Performs other related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with electrical and equipment maintenance work.
- Skill in the operation of the tools and equipment used in the trade.
- Skill in installing equipment, machines, wiring, or components to required specifications.
- Ability to diagnose and correct defects in electrical systems and equipment.
- Ability to read and work from blueprints and sketches.
- Ability to understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions; and
- Ability to plan and supervise other employees.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires a High School Diploma/GED and 4 years of experience in electrical work.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
- Requires a valid NC driver’s license and an acceptable driving record;
- A valid Electrical License (Limited class or higher) issued by the State of North Carolina Board of Electrical Contractors.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
- This position functions as an essential worker and must respond to inclement weather to perform work outside if required.
