The Custodian Porter performs a variety of routine and specialized custodial duties to maintain cleanliness, safety, and functionality of public buildings and facilities. This position provides custodial and customer service to building occupants and visitors, assists with event support, and ensures all assigned areas are maintained according to sanitation and operational standards. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Custodial Supervisor.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, offices, conference rooms, lobbies, and other public and staff-accessed areas.
- Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and polishes floors using appropriate cleaning methods and equipment.
- Dusts and wipes down furniture, fixtures, and surfaces to ensure a clean and professional appearance.
- Empties trash and recycling containers, replaces liners, and disposes of waste in accordance with procedures.
- Performs project work to include elevator maintenance, waxing and buffing floors, stairwell maintenance and high dusting.
- Performs minor maintenance tasks, including replacing install batteries for sink, soap dispensers, unstopping toilets/sinks, and changing urinal cartridges reports more serious issues to maintenance staff.
- Restocks restroom supplies and maintain inventory in janitorial closets throughout the County.
- Operates cleaning equipment such as auto scrubbers, carpet cleaners, vacuum machines, and pressure washers safely and effectively.
- Maintains accurate records of cleaning schedules, supply usage, and maintenance needs; submits logs to supervisor as required.
- Follows all established safety, health, and sanitation protocols and uses personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Secures facilities at the end of shift by locking doors, windows, and activating alarm systems as appropriate.
- Assists with setup and breakdown for meetings or events, including moving furniture, tables, and equipment.
- Respond promptly to custodial emergencies such as spills, biohazards, or supply shortages.
- Collects log sheets from assigned areas and communicates updates or concerns to the Custodial Supervisor.
- Provides courteous and responsive customer service to staff, visitors, and building occupants.
- Essential worker from time to time may be required to work in inclement working conditions including but not limited to spreading ice melt and shoveling snow.
- Performs related work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

- Experience in basic building maintenance (e.g., filter replacement, minor repairs).
- Familiarity with OSHA safety standards.
- Ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for cleaning chemicals.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow instructions and established procedures.
- Knowledge of proper cleaning methods, equipment, and chemical use.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage time effectively.
- General knowledge of the materials, equipment and tools used to assist in the repair and maintenance of buildings and grounds.
- Ability to acquire knowledge within a reasonable time period of the methods and techniques of a standard trade.
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate motorized equipment, hand brushes and spray guns in a safe manner.
- Knowledge of modern cleaning methods, materials, equipment, and safety practices.
- Knowledge of HIPPA, bloodborne pathogens and first aid.
- Ability to operate and maintain custodial equipment safely and efficiently.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards.
- Ability to lift, move, and carry heavy equipment or furniture as required.
- Effective communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to complete basic maintenance tasks and identify facility issues requiring attention.
- Be in good physical condition.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

- Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, shoveling lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
