GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This part-time position will work through the Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer Science (FCS) program to coordinate programs and deliver services focused on food and nutrition. This position will coordinate and deliver Extension’s food and nutrition service implementation for older adults as well as serve as a liaison for community food security efforts for senior adult populations. The position will support the development and delivery of the Extension Master Food Volunteer (EMFV) program in Durham County. The County Associate Extension Agent, as a FCS food and nutrition specialist, performs responsible professional and administrative work coordinating and executing the services within Durham County Cooperative Extension under the supervision of the FCS program.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitates training activities and group discussions that inform and empower stakeholders with the knowledge and support needed to achieve successful outcomes;
- Develops and revises training materials in order to enhance the education of program participants and stakeholders;
- Collaborates and networks with community partners and others regarding service needs;
- Coaches and mentors volunteers and program participants.
- Coordinates services with service providers for program participants and stakeholders to include arranging transportation and securing required materials and other support as needed.
- Assists in outreach, recruitment and marketing activities that are designed to increase awareness and to promote community participation in extension programs.
- Assists in grants management, grant writing and fundraising activities as needed to maintain funding for programs.
- Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and processes for providing customer and community services;
- General knowledge of media, communication, dissemination techniques and methods, human behavior and performance, and individual differences in ability, personality, learning and motivation;
- Basic skills in computer literacy, recordkeeping, statistical computation and grant writing;
- Ability to facilitate group discussions and to teach in a group setting;
- Ability to work with diverse audiences and to collaborate with community agencies and leaders;
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with community agencies and other partnering organizations;
- Strong, clear, and concise written and oral communication;
- Ability to make sound decisions in areas of responsibility.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree and six months of program-related experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with food and nutrition curricula and curricula designed to reduce food insecurity, such as More in My Basket (MIMB).
- Experience recruiting and training volunteers.
- Experience working with senior adult populations.
- Strong planning and organizational skills.
- Flexibility to work some weekends and evenings for community events and trainings.
