GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The Community Services Consultant works as a Parent Educator with the Welcome Baby Fatherhood Initiative, supporting fathers of children ages 0-17 improve their parenting skills and connection to their children and family. The work involves contacts with community leaders in welfare, public health, mental health, education, and other community organization to enlist their support and cooperation in program activities. The position functions as part of a collaborative team implementing the Nurturing Parents curriculum in Spanish and English as part of the Fatherhood Initiative.  The Community Services Consultant is a part-time (27 hours) temporary (3 years) position with benefits and is part of the Welcome Baby Program at Durham County Cooperative Extension.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

 

  • Recruit parent participants for programs.
  • Plan and facilitate parent education workshops in Spanish and English
  • Provide parent education according to a specific curriculum.
  • Build and maintain positive relationship with parents and co-educator.
  • Collaborate and connect with community programs and agencies to support the program participants and connect them with appropriate resources as needed.
  • Make phone calls to parents in between classes, review homework assignments and make comments, plan for each week’s session and select vignettes, review parent goals, and prepare group agendas
  • Purchase supplies for parenting workshops with funds provided.
  • Administer and gather pre and post testing tools and questionnaires for evaluation
  • Coordinate referrals with program coordinator including recruiting and enrolling parents in classes.
  • Assist with coordination of meals, childcare, parent incentives, and transportation as needed.
  • Assist in distributing information to community regarding parenting classes
  • Prepares activity reports and special reports as needed or requested, including data required for grant compliance. 
  • Performs related program work as required

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Knowledge of community resources and services available to families.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques in disseminating information to a target audience for a program.
  • Ability to organize, develop, and promote community/parent educational programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with community groups, agency personnel, and the general public.
  • Ability to plan and conduct pre and post surveys.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to facilitate community educational programs, such as the Nurturing Fathers Program.

 

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Graduation from a four-year college-or university and three years experience in a community, business, or government program, preferably in the fields of education, social work, public health, or public relations; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Written and Oral Bilingual Spanish Skills with oral language fluency.
  • Nurturing Fathers Parenting Program training or willingness to attend training.
  • Experience working with fathers and fatherhood programs.
  • Experience in recruiting and facilitating parenting workshops to families with children 0-17 years old.
