GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The Community Services Consultant works as a parent educator with the Welcome Baby program, supporting parents of children ages 0-8 to improve their parenting skills and connection to their children and family. The position functions as part of a collaborative team implementing evidence-based parenting curricula and programs that provide guidance on a wide range of parenting strategies, from child development to positive discipline techniques.  The work includes building connections with community partner organizations to enlist their support and cooperation in program activities.  The Community Services Consultant is a full-time position with benefits and is part of the Welcome Baby Program at Durham County Cooperative Extension.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

 

  • Plan and facilitate parent education workshops in English
  • Recruit parent participants for programs.
  • Provide parent education according to a specific curriculum.
  • Build and maintain positive relationship with parents and co-educator.
  • Collaborate and connect with community programs and agencies to support the program participants and connect them with appropriate resources as needed.
  • Make phone calls to parents in between classes, review homework assignments and make comments, plan for each week’s session and select vignettes, review parent goals, and prepare group agendas
  • Purchase supplies for parenting workshops with funds provided.
  • Administer and gather pre and post testing tools and questionnaires for evaluation
  • Coordinate referrals with program coordinator including recruiting and enrolling parents in classes.
  • Assist with coordination of meals, childcare, parent incentives, and transportation as needed.
  • Assist in distributing information to community regarding parenting classes
  • Prepares activity reports and special reports as needed or requested, including data required for grant compliance.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Knowledge of community resources and services available to families.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques in disseminating information to a target audience for a program.
  • Ability to organize, develop, and promote community/parent educational programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with community groups, agency personnel, and the general public.
  • Ability to plan and conduct pre and post surveys.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to facilitate community educational programs, such as The Incredible Years BASIC.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Graduation from a four‑year college‑or university and three years experience in a community, business, or government program, preferably in the fields of education, social work, public health, or public relations; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Written and Oral Bilingual Spanish or other language Skills with oral language fluency.
  • Incredible Years, Triple P (Levels 3 & 4), and/or Mothered/Fathered Program training or willingness to attend training.
  • Experience working with breastfeeding support programming.
  • Experience in recruiting and facilitating parenting workshops to families with children 0-17 years old.
