GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

Serves as a Children's Librarian at the Stanford L. Warren Branch Library. Plans, promotes and conducts programs and story times. Provides excellent customer service in a team-based environment including reference, reader’s advisory, and computer-based technology assistance. Performs professional library work developing and providing services and programs that support the library's strategic plan. Expands the library's outreach to appropriate community organizations. Serves on Durham County Library committees as assigned. Assists with preparation and expense tracking of unit budget.

 

Although the position is based at the Stanford L. Warren Branch Library, the successful candidate may be asked to work at other Durham County Library locations.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Develop and implement a wide variety of children’s programs both within and outside the library.
  • Promote and publicize library services, programming and resources, through, but not limited to, outreach efforts in places such as schools and/or childcare center visits.
  • Participate in planning system-wide events and special events.
  • Expand the library’s outreach to appropriate community organizations and work collaboratively with community agencies serving youth.
  • Keep current with new trends in library planning and services, especially issues affecting youth.
  • Assist customers at the information desk by providing reference, reader’s advisory and computer assistance.
  • Interpret library policies and procedures to the public.
  • Create book displays and book lists to promote the use of library materials.
  • Actively serve on system-wide teams and committees as assigned.
  • Assist with preparation of unit budget and tracking expenses.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

  • Thorough knowledge of children's literature;
  • General knowledge of reader interest levels and good knowledge of procedures, books and authors relevant to the assigned area;
  • Skill with library technology;
  • Knowledge of current library practices;
  • Ability to work pleasantly and effectively with people of all ages;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 

Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school. 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Ability to speak Spanish is strongly preferred
