ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
• Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
• Determines fire and life safety educational priorities, goals, and objectives, and the subsequent strategies and methods by allocating resources appropriately. Prepares and administers budget proposals and expenditure projections.
• Assists incorporated volunteer fire departments serving the County in developing and improving their fire prevention and firefighting capabilities.
• Completes a basic incident report so that all pertinent information is recorded, the information is accurate, and the report is complete.
• Administers a training record system so that the information captured is concise, meets all Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and legal requirements, and can be accessed.
• Develops policies to support the training program so that the goals are achieved.
• Inspects and evaluates fire scene, or evidence of the scene, and/or conducting a comprehensive review of documentation generated during the examinations(s) of the scene if the scene is no longer available.
• Responds to fire code, law, and life safety inquiries from citizens.
• Reviews and evaluates routine and detailed building plans, site plans, and fire protection system plans in terms of fire code and building code life safety criteria. Inspects and evaluates public, commercial, and residential structures to ensure compliance with jurisdiction, state and federal fire codes and ordinances.

• Conducts inspections of complex fire hazard complaints for compliance.
• Performs related work as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire & Safety Engineering Technology, Fire Science or related discipline from an appropriately accredited college or university.
- Six (6) years of fire inspection, fire operations or related experience which includes at least two years of supervisory experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
Requires North Carolina:
- Firefighter II certification.
- HAZ- MAT Operations certification.
- Fire Inspector Level III certification.
- Fire Investigation Technician certification.
- Certified Fire Investigator or International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) Certified Fire Investigator certification.
- Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina State Drivers's License with an accepatable three-year driving record.
PREFERENCES
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification preferred.
