GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

The Durham County Library is seeking an innovative library professional to lead the South Regional Library’s Adult Services Unit. The Senior Librarian will oversee services, resources, and programming for adults at the South Regional Library. This position is based at the South Regional Library, but candidate could be asked to work at other library locations.

 

Work is performed with independence under the supervision of the South Regional Library Manager.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Serves as the Adult Services Unit Manager at the South Regional Library.
  • Oversees the library’s adult spaces, the adult services team, the adult collection, and adult-related programming and outreach.
  • Trains, supervises, and manages South Regional Adult Services staff.
  • Performs professional and administrative library work and develops and provides library services and programs that support the library’s strategic plan.
  • Assists with the preparation and monitoring of unit budget.
  • Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates adult programming at the South Regional Library.
  • Serves on the regional library management team and committees as assigned.
  • Provides excellent customer service in a team-based environment.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

  • Thorough knowledge of library resources, procedures, and systems.
  • Analytical skills and knowledge of tools for evaluating the community and its information needs.
  • Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating programs for a wide variety of customers.
  • Ability to plan innovative programs in multiple locations.
  • Ability to adapt programming to meet the needs and skill levels of customers.
  • Ability to analyze problems, recommend solutions and make decisions.
  • High degree of comfort learning new technologies.
  • Ability to use good judgement in daily services.
  • Ability to relate library services to the needs of the community.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 

Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited school and six months of experience in professional library work.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

The ideal candidate would possess considerable public library experience, including some supervisory experience.
