RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Veteran Service Officer is assigned responsibilities involving the coordination of benefits and other related services for eligible veterans and their dependents and as legal representative/Power of Attorney on their behalf before U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Serves as an advocate for veterans in order to maximize services and benefits for eligible veterans and their families in a designated geographical area. Serves as a liaison for the Department to other federal and state agencies in matters related to veterans services and benefits. Give presentations at civic functions.  Develops, maintains, and coordinates comprehensive veterans outreach and public information programs.  Will conduct one-on-one interviews with claimants and prepare written statements on the behalf of the claimants. Analyze and interpret financial statements and legal documents, complex due process codes of Federal regulations and laws. Write well-grounded formal claims to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Investigate, troubleshoot and expedite claims when necessary. Track and manage cases daily.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills are necessary.
  • Experience working with computers.
  • The ability to advise, assist and maintain a proper working relationship with claimants, with diverse and economic background, many who may have complex physical and mental health issues.
  • The ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions. 
  • Ability to understand and interpret medical records and statements. 
  • Ability to use good judgment, strategy and maintain confidentiality. 
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

REQUIREMENTS:

 

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in business, psychology, human services, or a related field and two years of experience in veterans’ service work. Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina and an acceptable driving record.  Certification as a Veterans Service Officer by the North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs after one year of training.  Once certification is obtained, a Veteran Service Officer must complete and pass the Federal TRIPS training course in order to be eligible to access the Federal computer files.  

PREFERRED:

 

Prior honorable military service, an Accredited VSO Representative preferred.
