Durham County Public Health's School Health team is growing! We are hiring for 10 newly-established school health nursing positions. School health nurses provide important preventive health services to help students achieve physical and mental health and reach their academic potential.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

This Senior Public Health Nurse position is employed as a school nurse in the School Health Program. Responsibilities for the school health nurse include assessment, planning, and evaluating nursing interventions for students with chronic health conditions. Provides direct care and facilitates the practice components of case management. Provides instruction to students, school staff, and families regarding health issues and skilled procedures. Independently evaluates students presenting with health problems or concerns, arranges for appropriate care coordination and referral for students with health problems. Develops individual care plans for students with chronic or life-threatening medical conditions; instructs and monitors for safe medication administration. This Senior Public Health Nurse (School Health Nurse) practices in school settings and strategically collaborates with school district staff to increase the district’s capacity to address student health. May be required to provide nursing services and health support in Public Health Medical Division clinics, programs, and community response programs.

 

THIS IS A FULL-TIME, 12-MONTH POSITION.

 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

  • Must be able to work independently and make sound nursing judgments in a variety of complex health situations.
  • Must have the ability to record the services rendered accurately and interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience. 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Requires license to practice as Registered Nurse in NC by NC Board of Nursing; General Statutes of NC, Chapter 90, Article 9.

All DCoDPH employees are considered healthcare personnel (HCP) working in a health care setting with the potential for exposure to patients and/or infectious materials and, therefore, are required to comply and provide documented proof of the following:

  • Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR) vaccination/immunity; 
  • Varicella-Zoster Virus (Chicken Pox) vaccination/immunity; 
  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis);
  • Tuberculosis (TB) baseline screening within the last twelve (12) months prior to employment.
  • Hepatitis B vaccination/immunity – only required for DCoDPH employees with potential Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) exposures.

 

Identified DCoDPH HCP with potential Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) exposure have an additional requirement for the Hepatitis B vaccination. Required vaccination, serological testing to determine immunity, and baseline tuberculosis screening are available for all Public Health employees who elect to become DCoDPH patients upon request and at no cost.

Proof of vaccination and tuberculosis screening must be provided to Human Resources within seven (7) business days prior to the date of employment.
