GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The Public Health Nutrition Administrator serves as the Director of the Nutrition Division at the Durham County Department of Public Health (DCoDPH).  The Nutrition Division provides clinical, school-based, community, and population-based nutrition services.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

 

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals;
  • The position directly supervises four program managers/supervisors and one administrative support position
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed;
  • Develops Division goals and objectives with input of Program Managers that reflect community health needs and are consistent with the Department’s mission and overall goals;
  • The position directly supervises four program managers/supervisors and one administrative support position;
  • This position provides advanced level work and serves on the DCoDPH Leadership Team;
  • Program implementation;
  • Plans, prepares and monitors the budgets of cost centers assigned to the Nutrition Division;
  • Seeks and maximizes revenues to support services, including grant applications and management, service contracts and third-party reimbursements. Develop/monitor fiscal and program reports;
  • Collaborates with other Division Directors on issues relating to Public Health programs and operations;
  • Sets quality assurance standards for programming/services delivery;
  • Monitors performance levels and discuss any abnormal issues with Program Managers;
  • Manages program operations to ensure grant/contract deliverables are met; expenditures are at budget/target levels;
  • Performs related work as assigned.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Thorough knowledge and skills in personnel management, financial planning and management, program planning and administration, and public health nutrition;
  • Considerable knowledge of community resources, community health and nutrition issues, and evidence-based and best practice nutrition program delivery;
  • Thorough knowledge and experience in grant writing and administration;
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and leadership skills;
  • Knowledge of nutrition licensing, dietetic registration, and professional code of ethics;
  • Skill in administering complex and professional health services;
  • Ability to plan, develop, direct, and evaluate nutrition programs;
  • Ability to lead a team of professionals to reach goals and objectives;
  • Ability to understand research findings and national health/nutrition recommendations and appropriately apply to the practice setting;
  • Ability to establish rapport with and community agencies and groups, including the public and other governmental and health related officials.

 

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Requires a Master's Degree in Nutrition or closely related field supplemented by four (4) years of experience as a nutritionist or dietician including two (2) years in a supervisory position; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

 

  • Active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration and licensure by the North Carolina Board of Dietetics and Nutrition.

 

 

SPECIAL NOTE:

 

  • Must submit copy of Registered Dietitian and LDN cards with application.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • A minimum of five years of management experience.
