RESPONSIBILITIES

This position provides overall leadership and strategic direction for the Division of Health Education Community Transformation.

TYPICAL TASKS

  • Leads the Division of Health Education Community Transformation Division.
  • Develops Division’s goals, programs and metrics with input from staff by aligning with Durham County’s strategic plan, DCo DPH strategic plan and the community health priorities.
  • Represents the Deputy Health Director and/or the Department in Boards and Committees of other agencies.
  • Reviews organizational structure of Division to ensure personnel are organized efficiently and effectively to conduct activities which focus on Division objectives.  Determine need for additional personnel, resources, space, and equipment. 
  • Evaluates existing programs and program/services delivery and initiate changes directed toward improvement of processes and/or programs
  • Reviews primary and secondary health statistics, analyze data and monitor trends.
  • Reviews all materials to be disseminated to the public
  • Seeks opportunities for outside sources of funding.
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public health and public health education.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of program planning, implementation, and evaluation principals and methodologies.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods and techniques of disseminating health educational information to the public and of the facilities and media available.
  • Ability to supervise public health educators and to coordinate public health activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain favorable working relationships with community groups, local health department personnel and the public.
  • Ability to explain and apply state laws, rules, and regulations pertain­ing to public health.
  • Ability to speak effectively before various groups.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with individuals, groups and communities.
  • Ability to provide budgeting and financial management; staff supervision; materials and media development; grant writing and contracts management.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with various population groups. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A master’s degree in public health education or in public health work with a major in public health education and two years experience in public health education; graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in public health education and four years of experience in public health educa­tion; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
