GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs difficult skilled and technical work in the operation, maintenance and repair of a variety of mechanical equipment and/or electrical systems; does related work as required.
Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate workers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responds to requests for service for installation, maintenance and repair of all types of door hardware and locking devices in Durham County government buildings;
- Installs and maintains commercial door hardware including exit devices, door closers, magnetic locks, electric strikes, automatic door operators and other related devices;
- Disassembles mechanical and electrical locking devices and repairs or replaces parts as needed;
- Re-keys locks and cuts new or duplicate keys as needed;
- Maintains key control accountability of all keys issued and/or produced;
- Manages lock shop; orders and maintains locking supplies;
- Provides cost estimates for repairs, installations and maintenance;
- Supports carpenters and other trades as needed;
- Maintains records of work performed and prepares reports as needed;
- Performs general building maintenance work as needed; and
- Performs other related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, tools and techniques of mechanical equipment repair;
- Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with equipment maintenance work;
- Skill in the operation of the tools and equipment used in the trade;
- Knowledge of applicable Life Safety and egress codes;
- Ability to diagnose mechanical trouble in small machines end mechanical equipment;
- Ability to understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions;
- Ability to plan and supervise other employees;
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment under pressure to meet deadlines;
- Ability to maintain working relationships with a diverse population.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and three years of locksmith experience which includes six months in a lead worker capacity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid Locksmith License issued by the North Carolina Licensing Board and a valid class-appropriate driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina.
