GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

The Durham County Library is seeking an innovative library professional to coordinate and execute Tech Mobile services. The Senior Librarian will be responsible for the implementation of successful and engaging services and programs to encourage digital literacy and promote STEAM activities for all ages in the Durham community. This position manages the daily schedule of the Tech Mobile, promotes and supports library services, develop programs to engage the community, and responds to customer needs with excellent customer service.

 

*Note, this position is not responsible for driving the Tech Mobile but rather for the schedule, programs, resources, and services provided on the vehicle.

 

Work is performed independently, under the limited supervision of the Community Engagement Administrator, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

 

Must be able to work a flexible schedule including possible evening and weekend rotations.

Although this position is based at Main Library, the Tech Mobile is part of the Community Engagement Unit. The required work is regularly out in the community, and at various Durham County Library locations as needed.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Serves as the Tech Mobile Sr. Librarian as a member of Community Engagement unit 
  • Oversee all aspects of the library’s Tech Mobile programming and outreach schedule
  • Serves as the point person from the community to schedule events and programs, working as the liaison to the Tech Mobile Driver to finalize logistics
  • Develops and provide library services and programs that support the library’s strategic plan. 
  • Coordinates programming focused on digital literacy and STEAM activities for all ages through planning, scheduling, delegation, partnerships, contract development and facilitation.
  • Works frequently with the Maker+STEAM team to provide programs, resources and services to the community, especially those unable to visit a physical library location
  • Completes training classes and attends professional development seminars, workshops and conferences to learn and maintain skills and knowledge for professional growth to stay abreast of new and emerging technologies.
  • Answers research, informational, readers' advisory, and technology queries with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Assist library patrons with computer use and library technology.
  • Records program statistics, compiles and submits monthly reports.
  • Plans and monitors unit budgets
  • Researches and evaluates vendors for new or existing services, and programs
  • Monitors maintenance and upkeep of resources on the Tech Mobile
  • Oversees, in conjunction with IT staff, the upkeep and use of Tech Mobile technology 
  • Provides excellent customer service in the team-based environment.
  • Provides outreach services and resources specifically focused on reaching demographics that might otherwise face barriers to visiting physical library locations.
  • Takes initiative, seek new opportunities and challenges, and apply creative and innovative thinking.
  • Performs related work as assigned

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

  • Thorough knowledge of library resources, procedures, and systems  
  • Analytical skills and knowledge of tools for evaluating the community and its information needs. 
  • Experience planning, implementing and evaluating programs for a wide variety of customers. 
  • Ability to plan innovative programs in multiple locations. 
  • Ability to adapt programming to meet the needs and skill levels of customers.   
  • Ability to analyze problems, recommend solutions and make decisions. 
  • High degree of comfort learning new technologies.  
  • Experience with computer coding, programming, circuitry, 3D printing and/or other Maker/STEAM literacy technologies.  
  • Ability to use good judgement in daily services. 
  • Ability to relate library services to the needs of the community. 
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science or related discipline.
  • One year of professional library or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

The ideal candidate should possess considerable public library experience and experience running STEAM programs.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
